In brief
- Crypto exchange gemini has been impersonated by two youtube accounts.
- This kind of thing has been an issue in recent months.
- Ripple CTO david schwartz has also experienced problems with youtube's impersonation rules.
A hacker took over two youtube accounts to appear as though they were associated with crypto exchange gemini, according to a tweet from the company yesterday .
Youtube does not allow impersonations of people or channels on its platform, but impersonations remain an ongoing issue for the social media giant. On this occasion, the hackers rebranded the relevant youtube accounts with geminiâs brand name, as well as the crypto exchangeâs logo. And gemini wasnât too happy.
âthese scam accounts are not our company. We have reported these accounts to youtube,â said geminiâs official twitter account yesterday.

Whatâs more, this is a problem that has appeared to persist for gemini in recent months.
In october of this year, twitter user anndy lian publicly asked youtube to bring down fake videos that pretended to be associated with gemini, as well as the crypto exchangeâs co-founders and brothers, tyler and cameron winklevoss.
âcome on youtube, please get rid of this (sic) fake LIVE videos, 105,000 watching, 2800 likes. I am sure tyler winklevoss, cameron winklevoss, gemini are not and will not run such schemes,â lian said .
In july, gemini itself addressed yet another scam alert, admitting it had been âgetting dms about fake gemini profiles on various social media platforms.â
SCAM ALERTâď¸we've been getting dms about fake gemini profiles on various social media platforms. The below are our real corporate handles. Stay safe!
Gemini is not alone in running into problems on youtube. Ripple CTO david schwartz was banned in april for impersonating. Himself. Looks like youtube just canât quite hit its mark.

Tyler and cameron winklevoss, whose fortunes have been on a roller coaster since they jostled with fellow student mark zuckerberg at harvard university more than a decade ago, are once again billionaires thanks to a surge in the price of bitcoin.
The twins bought $11 million worth of bitcoins in 2013, according to the new york times, and soon became evangelists, creating crypto exchange gemini trust co. The 39-year-old brothers, who gained widespread fame following the release of the 2010 movie âthe social network,â briefly became billionaires in 2017 when bitcoin soared to a record before the volatile currency plummeted.
Bitcoin has more than doubled this year to $15,433, partly driven by fears that massive central bank easing and fiscal stimulus will debase currencies. Each of the twins is worth about $1 billion, according to the bloomberg billionaires index. They also own other cryptocurrencies including ether.
The winklevoss brothers declined to comment on their wealth through a spokeswoman.
Niche, volatile
Cryptocurrencies have increasingly gained the backing of established firms. Square inc. Last month said it invested about $50 million in bitcoin, while microstrategy inc.âs michael saylor cited the federal reserveâs recent actions as helping convince him to put the lionâs share of the software firmâs cash into the cryptocurrency. Fidelity investments in august disclosed it was starting a passively managed fund for wealthy investors, and hedge fund manager paul tudor jones has said itâs useful as an inflationary hedge.
âthe price of bitcoin is being driven by all of the money printing and uncertainty in the world right now,â tyler winklevoss, who is geminiâs chief executive officer, said in a statement.
Still, cryptocurrencies remain niche, risky and highly volatile. Warren buffett famously referred to bitcoin as ârat poison squaredâ several years ago, and hasnât changed that view, arguing that cryptocurrencies have no value. Their ownership tends to be highly concentrated, and so-called whales have sway over prices.
âIâm not a huge fan of cryptocurrencies,â ken griffin said during an event last month for the robin hood foundation. The citadel founder expressed concern about some of its ânefarious uses,â the lack of demand for such currencies from sovereigns, and the importance of the U.S. Dollar and its simplicity.
âovertaking goldâ
The winklevoss brothers continue to deepen their involvement in crypto. The U.K.âs financial conduct authority recently approved their application for an electronic-money license, paving the way for the expansion of gemini into the U.K. Market.
In an august essay, the twins said they expect bitcoinâs price to reach $500,000.
âinflation is coming,â they wrote. âmoney stored in a bank will get run over. Money invested in assets like real estate or the stock market will keep pace. Money stored in gold or bitcoin will outrun the scourge. And money stored in bitcoin will run the fastest, overtaking gold.â
Crypto-bros beware: these artists arenât buying your version of utopia

Last february, the new york times reported a cadre of crypto high rollers had left the continental united states for puerto rico to start a crypto-utopiaâthat is, a settlement where their money, air- and yacht-ports all run on the blockchain. The founder, brock pierce, saw an opportunity in the unincorporated organized territory, whose physical infrastructure was destroyed during hurricane maria, and proposed that they could use blockchain technology to repair the damage.
More importantly, U.S. Citizens who move to puerto rico donât have to pay federal taxes on income sourced there, and they pay zero in capital gains. Pierce, a former child star who made a fortune off bitcoin, wanted to name his utopia âpuertopia.â when informed that this translates to âeternal boy playgroundâ in latin, he changed the name to âsol.â and so, impervious to logistics and planning, these men have descended upon the hotels and childrenâs museum of old san juan to "rebuild" a region still reeling from environmental and economic distress.
Itâs hard to get excited about a nascent technology whose strongest proponents seem completely divorced from reality. At san franciscoâs telematic gallery, the exhibition eternal boy playground, created by the artist collective anxious to make (liat berdugo and emily martinez), captures the maddening frustration among those of us who havenât bought into crypto-mania.

The exhibit opens with the video, the insufferable whiteness of being, on the tensions between bitcoin true believers and those who argue that the utopia project is nothing more than disaster capitalism. Text culled from youtube videos and twitter conversations either with or about brock pierce display against backdrops that include paintings of spanish colonizers, the interior of a mansion in puerto rico and storm-demolished roads.
From the pile-up of dialogue, desperation emerges on both sides. Arguments fail for lack of knowledge, or because of the emotional exhaustion that accompanies fighting in online comment sections. Consider this bot-like exchange: âA billionaire is someone who has positively impacted a billion lives.â âA billionaire is someone who has stolen from billions of people.â
What I find troubling about these ardent crypto fans is their insistence that everyone outside of it canât possibly know what theyâre talking about. Their paranoia toward the institutions that enabled their financial gain in the first place routinely show through: âcash and the US dollar is a tool of fascism. If you had a clue about the future of money, youâd understand.â

Across from the video projection, a towel drapes across a beach chair bearing a screen-printed still from the insufferable whiteness of being. âyeah, they colonizers,â it reads. The chair sits in front of a wall decked out in what the artists call a âcrypto-tropicalâ or âcrypto-camouflageâ pattern.
The design is an assortment of crypto-references: a whereâs waldo-like whoâs-who of mega-investors and crypto-billionaires, pineapples, 1s and 0s, the puerto rican flag, low-res clipart images of the bitcoin logo, and the name âsatoshiâ (a nod to satoshi nakamoto, the elusive, unknown founder of bitcoin). The scene gets at the crypto brosâ bubble, but anxious to makeâs work really shines, and is funnier, when theyâre more substantively critical.
In seeing blocks and crypto bros, anxious to make sources drawings from mechanical turk (mturk), amazonâs crowdsourcing marketplace, to convey a laypersonâs understanding of cryptocurrency. The workers were paid in U.S. Dollars, and gallery proceeds from the books' sale support mturk worker-run forums.

The artists gave mturk participants prompts of âdraw how crypto works,â âdraw the blockchain,â and âdraw a person who owns bitcoin.â beneath each drawing is the workerâs ID number and the amount of time it took them to complete the drawing. While I often find mturk-based art to be one-note or exploitiveââlook at what the robot people did!ââthis is a thoughtful application of the technology.
The drawings are fascinating in their varying levels of detail, sloppiness, humor and confusion: many conflate bitcoin (the currency) with blockchain (the technology that underlies it).
In the corner of the gallery, artificial turf leads to a replica bitcoin ATM flanked by gold spray-painted sandbags, playing on the âspeculativeâ aspect of the speculative currency. But instead of accepting bank cards and dispensing bitcoin, this ATM accepts your fiat currency and prints out cryptocurrecy-related prophecies. These include âthe man stuck in the past, back when a pizza cost 10,000 bitcoins, has the most to loseâ and âA friend asks only for your time, not your cryptocurrency.â

Art canât deflect the hubris and idiocy of the present moment, but it can offer perspective. Anxious to make have carved out a modest critique of an island-sized tax shelter in a room-sized gallery space. Instead of directly confronting men (as many have pointed out, theyâre almost all men) in futile comment sections, they mine language and image-making to critique the devotional crypto-set.
These are still the early days of blockchain, a technology which has the potential to be a force for good. But in the impulsive puertopiansâ hands, altruistic use seems unlikely. We've seen so many complex, too-big-to-fail systems crash spectacularly. In these volatile times, the 99 percent of us who arenât gazillionaires will need to invest more in our own humility and suspicion, and not in far-fetched schemes.
'eternal boy playground' is on view at telematic gallery (323 10th street, san francisco) through feb. 2, 2019. Details here.

Youtube bans crypto channel for âpromoting illegal activities.â
Crypto channel altcoin daily run by brothers aaron and austin arnold was banned by the video-sharing giant youtube for "encouraging illegal activities."
Another cryptocurrency-related youtube channel appears to have fallen afoul of the platformâs community policies. According to a july 31 tweet from crypto community members and brothers aaron and austin arnold, their altcoin daily channel with 214,000 subscribers was terminated by youtube for âencouraging illegal activities.â the duo twitted that, âwe are a news/opinion channel and have never promoted anything illegal. An appeal has been submitted, the duo added.
Youtube reversed the ban two days later.
After more than two days in which the channel content was entirely inaccessible for subscribers, altcoin daily reported on august 3 that the youtube had reversed the ban and reinstated that channel. The video-sharing giant youtube aggressively deleted videos with content related to cryptocurrency later last year. Channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers or more, including chris dunnâs had videos were removed, while crypto beadles robert beadlesâ page was removed entirely. Youtube referred to one of these bans as âan errorâ during the review process. This year, the google-owned video-sharing platform shut down the official channel of cryptocurrency news-focused website bitcoin.Com for âa violation of youtubeâs terms of service.

Youtube faces lawsuits for allowing crypto scammers to use the platform.
Youtube is currently facing lawsuits from different organizations and people for not taking swift actions to remove crypto scam channels on the platform. Apple co-founder steve wozniak earlier filed a lawsuit against youtube for allowing crypto scammers to use his name for promoting fraudulent bitcoin giveaways. Ripple labs and its CEO brad garlinghouse also filed a lawsuit against youtube for the same reason. The CEO of the blockchain company had alleged that the video-sharing platform did not take any actions against channels promoting XRP scams, which has caused their customers to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars worth XRP.

Youtube bans channel âaltcoin dailyâ and crypto community is furious over it
Youtube channel named âaltcoin dailyâ banned by youtube by claiming that it engaged in illegal activities. The owners of the channel, aaron and austin, took to twitter and requested the team of youtube to review the decision of ban as they are not engaged in any illegal activity.
Reason of ban: encouraging illegal activities
Aaron and austin, the two brothers also record their protest over twitter and ask for help from the crypto community in this matter. They said in a tweet:
âURGENT! Youtube has just terminated our channel claiming that we were âencouraging illegal activitiesâ! We are a news/opinion channel! We have never promoted anything illegal! Appeal has been submitted. @teamyoutube please review this! Plz RT! HELP!â
The members of the crypto community show their sympathy for both brothers and also criticize youtube for this act.
âMG!! Altcoin daily was terminated by youtube! We stand together as youtubers, and I urge @teamyoutube to act quickly on this and get @altcoindailyio their channel back!â
The audience of the âaltcoin dailyâ has submitted their protest by tagging youtube and have asked the youtube team to take urgent action. A twitter user said:
âthis is ridiculous. Iâve been following altcoin daily for more than a year and theyâve been consistently diligent on the work they do. They never sold, solicited or did anything illegal on this channel. This is very absurd and ridiculous.â
Youtubeâs response
However, youtube responds and says:
âthanks for the tag â since you already submitted an appeal, youâll just have to wait for the result via email. Learn more about channel terminations, including why it can happen.â
Most of the people recommend them to shift to a decentralized platform, where no one can censor data related to cryptocurrency.
This is not the first time youtube attack crypto youtubers. In the past, the video streaming platform cracked down over many videos related to cryptocurrency.
However, some users think that the channel had promoted an ICO, which is the reason behind the ban.
âI believe I know the reason! You guys were promoting bidao to your audience, which is largely based in flag of united states. That ICO isnât available for US customers. I assume this is the case because someone else had a video posted promoting bidao and they themselves were terminated.â
Youtube ban on altcoin daily evokes harsh responses from crypto fans
Channel audience blames biased youtube algorithm

The news of the ban on altcoin daily youtube channel has shocked the crypto community. The biased attitude of tech giants, including google and facebook, towards crypto companies has once again come to the fore. âaltcoin dailyâ channel run by brothers aaron and austin is the latest victim.
URGENT! Youtube has just terminated our channel claiming that we were "encouraging illegal activities"!
We are a news/opinion channel! We have never promoted anything illegal!
Appeal has been submitted. @teamyoutube please review this!
The social media giant has banned the crypto news outlet saying it âencourages illegal activitiesâ on the platform. The channel has considerable fan following and subscribers who watch the channel for the latest crypto industry-related developments. It is a well-known outlet for crypto analysis.

The channel owners have filed an appeal with youtube asking it to reconsider its ban on altcoin daily. Also, aaron and austin have asked their audience to support them in their endeavor to persuade youtube to revoke the ban.
Ban on altcoin daily comes as a rude shock to the crypto community
The youtube channel of aaron and austin is well known in the crypto spheres. The two brothers share insightful views, opinions, and news about the crypto and blockchain realm. So, when news about the ban on altcoin daily surfaced, the crypto community rallied behind the brothers.
This is ridiculous. I've been following altcoin daily for more than a year and they been consistently diligent on the work they do. They never sold, solicited or any illegal on this channel. This is very absurd and ridiculous.
As soon as the two brothers informed the community, many top influencers and prominent crypto named announced their support. Most expressed their disbelief on the development, considering the channel hasnât promoted any illegal content pf questionable integrity in the past. The audience has come out in large numbers asking youtube to revoke the ban on altcoin daily.
Youtube algorithm under the lens
Crypto content has always faced a backlash from popular social media channels including, google, facebook, youtube, and more. Many fans of altcoin daily have said that youtube uses a defective algorithm to single out crypto channels.
Most supporters say that crypto channels churn out blockchain-related content, which does not violate its community standards. In the past, too, the youtube algorithm has created a similar furor. In this case, the algorithm has detected âillegal activityâ even though the channelâs audience says that the channel never solicited any illegal product.
The incident has also bought to fore the latest youtube policy that says the social media giant isnât responsible for any scamming activity on their platform. The policy is in stark contrast to the action it usually takes on crypto-related channels. Interestingly, many crypto scammers with thousands of subscribers roam freely on the same platform.
It remains to be seen how the ban on altcoin daily is handled by the worldâs most popular video platform.
